Meet Chinasa T. Okolo: Championing AI Governance for the Global South

Early Life and Education

Chinasa T. Okolo, Ph.D., is a trailblazer in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on AI governance and equitable technology development. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in 2023, where her groundbreaking dissertation explored how AI can be made more accessible to novice users in the Global South. Specifically, her research investigated how frontline healthcare workers in rural India perceive AI, with a focus on AI explainability to bridge the technology gap.

Before Cornell, Chinasa earned her B.A. in Computer Science from Pomona College and completed her M.S. at Cornell, furthering her expertise in human-centered AI, information and communication technologies for development, and AI ethics.

Influential Research and Policy Advocacy

Chinasa’s work goes beyond theoretical research—she is deeply involved in policy advocacy to ensure that communities in Africa and the Global South are not left behind by rapid advancements in AI. Her efforts include contributing to Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and collaborating on the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI, led by Yoshua Bengio. These projects focus on fostering responsible AI adoption in Africa, addressing issues such as algorithmic bias, digital exploitation, and the marginalization of data economies.

Chinasa's research explores how AI can be used to address pressing challenges in Africa, such as flood detection and crop disease monitoring, while also considering the potential harms, including data exploitation and harassment enabled by AI-powered microlending platforms.
